With the 2021 Hottest 100 set to take place on January 22nd, 2022, we here at Tone Deaf have decided to take a stroll down memory lane, recapping the countdowns of yesteryear in the lead-up to the latest edition of musical democracy. Today, we’re taking a look back at the Hottest 100 of 2001.

Taking place in January of 2002, the triple j Hottest of 2001 was the ninth annual countdown held by the station which limited votes to songs released in the last year.

After Powderfinger had managed to take out two countdowns in a row, expectations were rather high in 2001 for another Aussie act to top the countdown. After having first placed back in 1999’s countdown, Alex Lloyd returned to the fold to help top the poll with his breakthrough track ‘Amazing’.

Incidentally, Alex Lloyd’s winning track made him the first solo performer since Denis Leary back in 1993 to top the countdown.

The top of the countdown was also marked by a bit of a comical moment thanks to Breakfast hosts Adam Spencer and Wil Anderson. When they reached the #1 track, the pair decided to play their own track, ‘Sorry Matt Hayden’.

A parody of OutKast’s ‘Ms Jackson’, the track focused on cricketer Matt Hayden and was quickly revealed to be a joke. Ironically, The Vines’ cover of the track charted in the 2002 countdown, while OutKast almost reached #1 in 2003 when their song ‘Hey Ya!’ reached #2 instead.

In an odd turn of events, a musician named Matt Hayden had previously made the countdown back in 1995 under the name of Mindless Drug Hoover when ‘The Reefer Song’ hit #12.

At the end of the day, triple j’s Hottest 100 for 2001 featured songs by 73 different artists from a total of 7 countries, including 38 from Australia, 33 from the USA, and 22 from England.

Five artists managed to score three tracks in the countdown, including Eskimo Joe, Muse, Something for Kate, and The Strokes. Thom Yorke also placed three times, including twice with Radiohead, and once as a guest on PJ Harvey’s ‘This Mess We’re In’. Meanwhile, a further 16 artists appeared twice.

Also, if you’re keen on some of the more obscure facts, the shortest track to appear in the countdown was The White Stripes’ ‘Hotel Yorba’ at 2:10, while the longest was The John Butler Trio’s ‘Betterman’ at 8:19.
