HELLO! This is Ruby Lou from Secretive George. We play pop music! Someone once described us as “playschool for hipsters.” Unfortunately, that is probably true. We all have rather different musical tastes, resulting in some weird mutant brand of pop; shredding guitars, entwining synthesizers, crowd-choir vocals. It’s kinda fun. Sometimes we dress up. Other times we just like to dance. Our last show is on the 26th of April at the Evelyn Hotel! It starts at 5:30pm, twelve super good bands are playing and there is cheap booze. YES!
What’s your earliest memory of performing and who inspired you to start?
I have a bizarre and rather vague recollection of playing piano at a retirement home. I think I was getting lessons at the time, I guess my mother thought it would be a good idea.
You must answer this question honestly or we steal your rider. What and where was the first gig you went to?
Pretty sure it was The Cat Empire at the Prince Bandroom. A long, long time ago. Good timez.
‘Fess up. What records have you stolen from your parent’s record collection and why?
Any Barry White I can find, for obvious reasons. The man is brilliant.
What’s on heavy rotation on your iPod right now?
Outkast! Madvillain! Melt-Banana! Ponytail! OOIOO!
How do you find new music?
Pretty much from friends.
Do you have any particular ritual before you go on stage, or even a lucky charm you take with you?
Nope. Unless you count debauchery.
If you could curate your own festival, where would it be, who would be on the bill, how many people would you let in and what features would it have?
I’d like to have it in a really beautiful place, like in the hills, and would probably get a whole bunch of really cool, experimental or just plain weird bands and they could play wherever and for as long as they want, but not have too many people. Lots of food! Possibly somewhere to swim. Textas and paint lying around so people can paint things and themselves. Chilled vibes. Mad babez.
When you’re Rolling Stones Big, what are you going to request on your rider: don’t be shy. We want specifics!
Hmmmm, I’d have to go a really decent sized cake with a stripper inside and a rum and coke fountain. Maybe also something to do with butter. Or mayonnaise. Preferably, all in a blow up swimming pool.
Because it’s more fun to do things together, which living Australian artist would you most like to collaborate with? Tell us why?
My bandmate Jack. He has a job and is always working. He has been waiting for me to wake up, I have been tired. He is quite good.
What is your band’s music the best soundtrack for?
A journey of love, happiness, mourning, the stress of being unemployed, the stress of working too much, and a disregard for money. Something featuring lots of drunken dancing, to be more to the point.
Where we can see you play next, what releases do you have available and where can we get them?
Our next and last show is at The Evelyn Hotel on the 26th of April. There is talk of an album but we haven’t done anything about it yet! You’ll be able to get it at our show if it exists. We shall see! Meanwhile, why don’t you listen to us or download some free music?
