Slayer have released a cryptic video promising their “final chapter”, leaving fans to wonder just what is on the cards.

Over the last year, fans of thrash metal have had a hard time coming to terms with the fact that after almost four decades, Slayer are finally calling it quits.

First announcing the news early in 2018, the band soon kicked off a final worldwide trek, which included a visit to Australia as part of this year’s Download Festival.

However, while fans are awaiting the announcement of the band’s final show, Slayer have taken to social media to share a cryptic video promising that something mysterious is on the way.

Titled ‘Coming Fall 2019’ and featuring footage of a shadowy figure digging in the ground, a voiceover promises that a “final chapter” is on the way.

“To every story, there is a tragedy,” the voice explains as the video’s figure digs up what appears to be a cross.

“Life is a book, filled with chapters. Some tell stories of a good time. Some tell stories of the dark. To every monster, there is a hero, to every nightmare, we all wake up, to every story, there is a final chapter.

“Some monsters can become human. Other monsters reap for revenge. This is the end of the monsters.”

Now, logically, this appears to be a teaser for the band’s final run of US shows, but the cryptic nature of the video has left fans scratching their heads.

Could the band in fact be gearing up to release another album? Or perhaps we’ll be getting another series of videos in the same vein as the Repentless trilogy?

As it stands, Slayer’s most recent album was 2015’s Repentless, which marked their first record since the passing of founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman.

When quizzed about the possibility of a new record in 2018, Hanneman’s replacement – Gary Holt of Exodus – gave a rather simple “no”.

“No, there’s no new album,” he explained (via Blabbermouth). “I’d say it’s a no. But my name is Gary ‘No Comment’ Holt today. I don’t know nothing. You’ve seen the dates, you saw the press releases.

“And come out and celebrate the mighty history of Slayer, which I’m lucky to have been part of for the last seven years now. It’s been a ride, it’s been remarkable, and we’re gonna end it in gloriously violent fashion.”

Whatever the case, it appears that fans will find out exactly what Slayer have in store in the near future, though the chances of it involving any of their Australian fans look rather slim.
