Slipknot guitarist Mick Thomson has opened up about his thoughts on Metallica, saying he felt “insulted” by Metallica’s 1991 effort.

Back in the late ’80s, Metallica were undoubtedly one of the most popular metal bands on the scene. With four albums under their belt as they went into the ’90s, fans were undoubtedly eager to see what their next move would be.

Working with producer Bob Rock, the group created 1991’s self-titled effort, commonly referred to as The Black Album. While it remains the band’s best-selling album to date, it was met with divided opinions from fans, with some criticising the band’s changed sound, and many accusing Metallica of selling out.

However, one of the people who appeared to have been against Metallica’s new sound was future Slipknot guitarist Mick Thomson, who says he was “insulted” by the album.

Speaking to Metal Hammer recently, Thomson sat down to discuss the albums that have affected his life. While speaking about topics such as the first album he bought, the best artwork, and the album he wishes he made, Thomson pointed to Metallica when it came to an “album that should not be”.

“I understand now that I’m in a band that you have to stop repeating yourself or you’ll be bored but I loved those first four albums so much and I was horrified when I heard The Black Album,” Thomson began. “I felt insulted and didn’t listen to them for years but that’s over now.”

“Are there similarities to how Slipknot have changed? I don’t think so and, besides, I certainly never cut my fucking hair.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Mick Thomson also discussed Slipknot’s enduring legacy, noting that the album he wants to be remembered for is his band’s self-titled effort.

“It’s impossible ’cos every album is different and they all make us the band we are, but this album launched us,” he explained. “We had years to make that album and with all the time in the world and no pressure, we just played with total freedom.”

“It’s very honest and we felt that shit. We took the time to make it as nasty as we wanted and I think it stands the test of time.”

Slipknot are in the studio at the current time, working on the follow-up to 2014’s .5: The Gray Chapter. Last year, the band released their latest single, ‘All Out Life’, though we’re yet to receive word on when the new album will arrive.
