During a recent Q&A on Instagram, Billy Corgan made an interesting claim that Smashing Pumpkins were asked to provide a song for the final scene of Shrek. The scene famously features a cover of The Monkees’ “I’m A Believer” by Smash Mouth.
After making this claim, Corgan continued by sharing that the song used would’ve been “Untitled“. Check out screenshots below via Exclaim!
Smash Mouth have now responded to Corgan, telling a fan on Twitter “If it feeds Billy’s ego to think they we’re first let him think that.” The tweet also says that the producers of Shrek were trying to get Smash Mouth on the soundtrack for over a month before they agreed to do it. Read the full tweet below.
Actually we said no and Michael Austin from Dreamworks kept calling. That went on for over a month. We assume multiple bands we're asked. If it feeds Billy's ego to think they we're first let him think that. Def would have been a darker approach. @THE_EELS are on it & others.

One thing is certain, they’re right about choosing “Untitled” as being a “darker approach”. We’re not entirely sure how that would’ve gone down in the cinema. Smash Mouth are pretty much still thriving off the success they had with the Shrek soundtrack, to the point that their music has become memes.
Smash Mouth recently announced an Australian tour, and are set to visit our shores in November. They also collaborated with Car Seat Headrest, releasing covers of each others songs. The Smashing Pumpkins are currently on a reunion tour, they recently performed two classic Hole songs with Courtney Love.
