Sparklehorse singer/songwriter Mark Linkous committed suicide on March 6th. His family released a statement confirming that the 47 year-old died from a self administered gunshot wound in an alleyway near a friend’s home in Knoxville, Tennessee.
In a statement to Rolling Stone they said “It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today.We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There’s a heaven and there’s a star for you.”
Sparklehorse released their first album, Vivadixie…, in 1995, which was followed by three more full length albums including the much acclaimed 2001 release, It’s A Wonderful Life. Linkous had led a troubled existence, suffering a drug overdose in London while touring supporting Radiohead, which left him in a wheelchair for six months.
