Aussie music legends the Sunnyboys are hitting the road next year, celebrating their 40th anniversary with a new release and national tour.

Back in 1980, the Aussie music scene welcomed the arrival of a new group of Sydney musicians called the Sunnyboys.

Featuring Jeremy and Peter Oxley alongside Bil Bilson and Richard Burgman, the group became firm favourites of the live scene, releasing their phenomenal Lobby Loyde-produced, self-titled debut the following year.

As the years continued, the existence of the Sunnyboys was sporadic at best, with their entire career featuring only about 12 solid years spent together, and no new albums being released since 1989’s Wildcat.

Although the group have reunited from time to time for a series of live shows over the past few years, they’ve just made a big announcement to their dedicated fans, announcing a new release and national tour.

Released on November 29th, Sunnyboys 40 collects the group’s eponymous debut 7″ from 1980 (complete with original version of ‘Alone With You’), and packages it alongside four new recordings culled from the archives of chief songwriter Jeremy Oxley.

With pre-orders available now, the record will be released on CD, cassette, and digital platforms, with the vinyl version featuring a hard cover 12 page 30cm x 30cm photo essay of the band.

“You can’t keep a good band down,” explained Jeremy Oxley. “These new and revitalised songs take it back to the reason behind the band in the first instance.

“The 40 years in between is nicely depicted in the change in voice while the energy and craftsmanship is still there in the sound, albeit a little fuller and rounder. I guess, it’s just like us too really… ”

It doesn’t end there though, because fans of the iconic group will get a chance to see the group perform these new songs live early next year when they hit the road for an anniversary tour.

Kicking off at the Torquay Hotel in Victoria, the band will hit up Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast, along with a just-announced appearance at the Twilight At Taronga concert series in Sydney.

Featuring support at most shows from the inimitable Painters & Dockers (Rocket Science are pulling the early shift in Sydney), these shows are set to be an explosive celebration of Aussie talent, giving fans the chance to receive a valuable lesson in some of the finest local rock music of all time.

“We really didn’t think we would ever play again as a band,” added Peter Oxley. “But wow, we have and we sure are having a bloody great time doing it.”

Tickets to the Sunnyboys’ upcoming tour are on sale from Thursday, October 31st through Feel Presents, with a pre-sale kicking off two days earlier on October 29th.
