One of the most unexpected collaborations in music seems to be bearing fruit, with Tenacious D frontman Jack Black revealing the duo have recorded a song with Jack White.
Back in June, the music universe nearly imploded when it was revealed that there was now photographic evidence that Jack White and Jack Black had met each other in person.
While there had been stories of the pair crossing paths at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, and even Jack Black introducing a White Stripes show, footage of these incidents was quite lacking.
Taking to Instagram a couple of months back, the official Tenacious D account shared an image of Kyle Gass and Jack Black meeting Jack White at London’s Heathrow Airport.
With both Tenacious D and Jack White’s Saboteurs (or Raconteurs, if you’re not an Australian) in the country to perform shows, The D joked that they had “hired a new merch guy”, much to the delight of their legions of fans.
Now, it seems as though Jack Black’s idea of calling a potential collaboration between the pair “Jack Grey” has been somewhat realised, revealing that Tenacious D have indeed teamed up with the blues-rock icon.
As The Tennessean reports, Tenacious D found themselves in Nashville for a concert over the weekend, with Black soon singing the praises of his inversely-named counterpart.
“Jack White,” Black began, “we went over to his house today and recorded a brand new song.”
Adding that the new song should be released via White’s Third Man Records label sometime in the near future, fans are hoping that this is in fact a real collaboration that has taken place and not just an empty onstage promise, like talk of a sequel to The Pick Of Destiny.
Whatever the case, Jack White has a penchant for recording some intriguing musicians at his studios in the past, having teamed up with names as varied as Stephen Colbert, the Insane Clown Posse, and Australia’s own Courtney Barnett over the years.
It looks like we’ll have to wait to see if Jack White makes a musical appearance on the track or if his contribution was merely in the form of production, but we’re hoping that the new song will be released on grey vinyl.
