Two parents in Texas have been arrested on second-degree child endangerment charges after allegedly leaving their 11-year old daughter at home to attend a Godflesh concert in Detroit, reports the Texas Chronicle. Godflesh are a metal band from England, known for touring infrequently.
John Gurrero, 48, and Virginia Yearnd, 39, were arrested Monday upon their arrival back in Houston. According to court documents, authorities were alerted by the young girl’s great aunt on Thursday after she learned the child had been left alone since the parent’s departure on Wednesday morning.
Deputies arrived at the house to find the 11-year old trying to cook herself a meal on the stove. The mother initially denied the trip to Detroit, claiming that they were only a state over in Louisiana. Yearnd also insisted that she had asked her sister to check on her daughter, but the child said no such arrangement was made.
In Texas, a parent – or anyone else who has custody or cares over a child under 15 – can be charged with child endangerment if he or she “intentionally abandons the child in any place under circumstances that expose the child to an unreasonable risk of harm,” according to the Texas Penal Code.
Bet they’re regretting not booking a babysitter right now.
