Flume is arguably one of Australia’s biggest musical exports in recent times. In addition to topping the world’s largest musical poll, the Sydney muso has also amassed a huge fanbase around the world, well and truly putting Aussie talent on the map. But now, there’s a petition to ensure that Flume’s legendary status is cemented by way of a life-size statue, because of course there is.
As The Fader reports, Joseph Smith recently took to the Change.org website to begin a petition with the intent of a statue of Flume being erected on Manly Wharf. Petitioning the Northern Beaches Council, and Warringah Council, the campaign states its goal rather clearly. “Manly is home to Australia’s finest electronic music export, Flume. It just makes sense that the GRAMMY winning artist is immortalised on the wharf, right,” the petition begins. “Flume has released two studio albums and numerous EPs since bursting onto the electronic music scene, and has become an ambassador of Aus dance music.”
“If anyone deserves to be sculptured, it’s Flume!”
Five days on from the petition’s creation, it’s already managed to score close to 300 signatures, but it still has quite a way to go before it reaches its goal of 500 signatures. Of course, knowing how dedicated Aussie music fans are, it probably won’t be too long before it reaches that goal.
This wouldn’t be the first time that Aussie musicians have had statues made to commemorate their influence and legacy, so it’s not like this idea is exactly out of the question. However, if you consider the other artists that statues have been proposed for, including AC/DC’s Bon Scott, INXS’ Michael Hutchence, and now Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, these artists all have one thing in common – they’re no longer with us. So hopefully we may see a new trend of commemorating the legacy of our still-living musos so that they can be around to appreciate it.
