This Body Is Wrong For Us centres around the peculiar concept that Go-Go Sapien’s second album is a force of such a destructive nature that it will literally tear the fabric of time and space and cause the abrupt deaths of anyone who stops listening to it. Set mostly in present day Melbourne, but with a curious visit to 19th Century England, this 47 minute surreal schlock-horror film (written, directed, produced and edited by Go-Go Sapien frontman, Will Hindmarsh) is as viciously entertaining as it is volatile.
Gavin (Go-Go Sapien bassist, Kal Salter), awoken by the abrasive music penetrating his home, discovers that the entire world has been invaded, yet the source of the deafening noise is unknown. He soon observes that whenever a song changes, people either die suddenly or are transported to a random time and place. After his wife falls victim to the lethal music, Gav’s determination to locate and destroy the source takes him on a wild trail through Melbourne’s seedy underbelly, an unproductive spacewalk and numerous encounters with a bizarre masked villain. Gathering cryptic clues along the way, Gav unearths the secret to evade being thrust into another time and space at the end of the song, allowing him the opportunity to exact his revenge.
This Body Is Wrong For Us is charmingly b-grade. From employing the sky as a makeshift green screen, to the creative manipulation of a fishbowl and a blanket into a spacesuit, the resourceful costuming and special effects alone make this a film worth watching. The impressive cast features many distinguished musicians including Kim Salmon, Liz Stringer, Dave Graney, Laura Jean, Triple R’s Elizabeth McCarthy, Van & Cal Walker, The Bedroom Philosopher and Linda & Bean Dacio. Soundtracked entirely by the futuristic psych-rock of Go-Go Sapien’s second album, the idiosyncratic plot weaves a web of apocalyptic pandemonium through the backstreets of Melbourne’s inner suburbs and is a cautionary tale of creativity left to blossom unbridled for too long… but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Few bands would be willing to admit that their music can kill. However, it’s only through its absence that Go-Go Sapien’s sophomore release become a brutal, bloodthirsty beast, which could be interpreted as a clever allusion to the otherwise fantastic quality of this album. The indisputable moral centre of this story is that if you stop listening to This Body Is Wrong For Us, you will die.
Go-Go Sapien will be launching their eleven track second album This Body Is Wrong For Us on Friday November 4th at The Evelyn, Fitzroy. Supporting on the night will be Harry Howard & The NDE, The Queens Head and Vicuna Coat.
