It’s sometimes said that the strength of a song is how it can survive being adapted to alien settings. Case in point: Violent Soho’s signature hit ‘Covered In Chrome’ seems to work just as well as a club-worthy groover as it does a moshpit inciting guitar standard.
The electronic wizards behind the ‘Covered In Chrome’ alchemy are Melbourne five-piece Northeast Party House, who graced Triple J Breakfast this morning as the latest to take part in the weekly Like A Version segment.
Transporting the grunge attack of the original to a cooly, restrained electronic setting, Northeast Party House’s ‘Covered In Chrome’ starts with understated, syncopated guitars before frontman Zach Hamilton-Reeves begins the recognisable vocal line.
It might seem initially like they’ve shorn off the track’s iconic ‘Hell Fuck Yeah’, but don’t worry it’s there, putting a sample pad to great use on the ‘yeah’ part (and even later touched up with a little sampling of Lorde’s ‘Tennis Court’).

It’s nothing if not intriguing and reminiscent of fellow Melbourne dance-rock provocateurs World’s End Press’ own electro take on Tame Impala for Like A Version last year. We’ll have to wait and see if it ruffles the feathers of rock purists the same way that Dead Letter Circus’ acoustic re-tooling of the Rage Against The Machine managed to (even penning an open letter to deal with the backlash).
But we think we’re with Triple J Breakfast host Alex Dyson, who positively beams with enthusiasm at the end of the performance.

As well their Violent Soho transformation, Northeast Party House also gifted Triple J listener with a great in-studio version of their own track, ‘The Haunted’, from debut album Any Given Weekend.
