A trip to Worthy Farm is off the cards until at least 2021, but you can find solace in this inspired Lego simulation of the UK festival.

On the second weekend of March, Glastonbury announced its enormous 2020 lineup. Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar and Diana Ross were the event headliners, with the likes of Charli XCX, Robyn, Crowded House, Groove Armada, Dua Lipa, The Specials and FKA Twigs also on the list.

The lineup was undeniably drool-worthy, but the announcement felt exceedingly optimistic. It came on the same day that Download Festival Australia was cancelled and just a few days before organisers pulled the plug on Bluesfest 2020. And Glastonbury is in England; the European country expected to suffer the highest COVID-19 death toll.

Suffice to say, not many were surprised when the event was cancelled fewer than seven days later. But it was still heartbreaking, particularly for Cheshire man Adam Hardman who had tickets for what was to be his third Glastonbury. But Hardman’s not one to sit around ruminating on what could’ve been. Instead, he set about creating a micro Glastonbury using Lego figurines and a variety of household odds and ends.

Hardman called in help from his housemate Jonathan Oakes and the pair filmed the event live in their Warrington backyard. An iPad positioned at the rear of the mock Pyramid stage beamed classic performances from Glastonburys past, including the Arctic Monkeys’ 2013 headline set, Dolly Parton’s rave-reviewed 2014 performance and Gorillaz’ last-minute 2010 headline.

They even set up hyper-coloured festival lighting, a smoke machine, and included plenty of swooping camera action. Hardman’s Facebook upload made an immediate impact and the videos have now reached more than a million viewers.

Speaking to the Warrington Guardian, he said his purpose was simple. “It’s just been one thing after another recently. And I just thought that if someone watches this and smiles then we’ve achieved something.”
