Tone Deaf music website was born at a kitchen table in a one-bedroom apartment during a steaming hot Melbourne summer. It all started out as a bit of fun to help promote indie club nights, live shows and tours for a couple of young Melbourne promoters dabbling in the world of live music.

Quickly forming a mind of its own, the website grew rapidly and a young Darve Smith and one Nicholas Jones decided they should throw a little launch party as shit was getting’ real! A dual party took place-featuring performances from Big Scary and The Demon Parade.

Another year passed by and the website continued to grow and the time had come again for another birthday, so a first birthday party was booked featuring Steve Kilbey from The Church and Ricky Maymi from The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Not only was the website celebrating its first birthday, it had also just received it’s first taste of accreditation after being offered backstage and behind the scenes passes for U2’s 360 tour!

As the website continued to grow, before everyone knew it a 2nd birthday party was in order. Birthday # 2 took place at iconic Melbourne rock venue The Espy. This time pals The Laurels and Bleeding Knees Club rocked the stage. Along with celebrating another birthday, Tone Deaf was celebrating its first office space. (No more kitchen tables!)

Now in its third year, Tone Deaf has over 250 contributors nationally, publishes over 100 record reviews, 75+ gig reviews, 50+ interviews, and over 100 photo galleries every month. The live arm books Ding Dong Lounge and runs the ‘Bowled Over Series’ at St Kilda Bowls Club every summer and puts on regular shows at Cherry Bar.

Granting Tone Deaf their one birthday wish, Twinsy will be blowing out the candles and playing their first Melbourne headline show! Hailing from the perpetually cold regional town of Ballafornia, Australia, (Ballarat), Twinsy’s Guy Chappell (Yacht Club DJs) and Michael Belsar (Hunting Grounds) are the pina colada swilling, feel good, super duo who are no strangers to the Australian music scene. Since launching earlier this year the pair has steadily built a swirl of interest internationally while playing support slots on sold out tours and festival appearances.

Bringing the party from Brisbane: Sampology will be hitting the decks. This guy is not your ordinary DJ; he’s more of a turntable technician and a “Super Visual” AVDJ. In fact he has fast become one the world’s leading Audio Visual DJs. His live show has been seen at some of the largest music, film and arts festivals internationally and back home including Big Day Out, SXSW, Big Chill Festival (UK), Berlin Music Festival, Falls Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Sydney Festival, Tropfest and Adelaide Fringe Festival. Unlike your regular artist releasing singles, EPs and albums, Sampology was asked by Iconic act The Wiggles to do the audio and video remix on their 20th anniversary tribute album “ReWiggled” and spends the rest of his time touring live music venues and clubs around the world. Now back on Australian soil, Sampology will be joining in the celebrations with a DJ set, so make sure you wearing your dancing shoes.

Representing for Melbourne, these guys are known as the impeccably dressed five piece from bayside area, Sons et al. are a band of four brothers and an additional handsome front man Nick Acquroff who has become the surrogate brother. Think laid back electronic grooves of Cut/Copy and combine them with the mesmerising rich vocals to the likes of The National from man Nick Acquroff, on top of a tight live show, it’s easy to see why the band have already gained a reputation as having an exciting live performance. Their debut EP was recorded with English electronic duo DNR (otherwise known as The Slips), and their first single ‘See Me Run’ has just hit the radio airwaves!
