It’s not every day that Trent Reznor makes content for kids, but the Nine Inch Nails frontman is now teaming up with Atticus Ross to score Soul, the latest Pixar film.

Ever since Trent Reznor helped produce the soundtrack to Natural Born Killers, the industrial icon has been drawn to the world of film soundtracks, While it wouldn’t be until 2010’s The Social Network that he scored a full film, it opened up the floodgates for a deluge of compositions for the big screen.

Since then, barely a year has gone by where Reznor and longtime partner Atticus Ross haven’t produced a soundtrack, with movies like Gone GirlBird Box, and Patriots Day all featuring their handiwork.

Now, Reznor and Ross are teaming up to score another film, but this one isn’t a psychological thriller or an immersive mystery, rather, it’s the latest flick from the folks that brought you Toy Story.

As Entertainment Weekly reports, this weekend saw Disney’s D23 expo take place in California where details were revealed about the upcoming Pixar film, Soul.

Starring the likes of Jamie Foxx, Tiny Fey, Daveed Diggs, Questlove, and Phylicia Rashad, EW notes that Soul sees Foxx cast as “an unsatisfied middle school band teacher” who dies just before getting the job of a lifetime.

The rest of the plot seems to be a little more metaphysical than most Pixar films, focusing around Joe trying to get his soul back to earth, and seeing Tina Fey’s character of 22 serving as a spiritual sidekick of sorts.

With a film that boasts musical icons like Daveed Diggs, Questlove, and even Jamie Foxx, it appears as though Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will be taking on the soundtrack relatively unaided, though Jon Batiste will help out with some of the jazzier numbers.

Soul is set to be released on June 20th, 2020, so there’s plenty of time to imagine what Trent Reznor’s musical contribution to a kid’s movie will sound like.
