Tyler, The Creator has got triple j’s feature album this week, with his latest record, IGOR, being given the honour.

If you’ve been paying attention to the world of hip-hop over the last few years, you would undoubtedly know that Tyler, The Creator has become one of the most prominent names in the genre.

Having kicked off his career as part of the often controversial Odd Future back in the ’00s, their de facto leader branched out into solo work, launching his debut album, Goblin, in 2011.

A confronting release, this trend continued over the next few years, with 2015’s Cherry Bomb eventually resulting in Tyler, The Creator reportedly being banned from Aussie shores.

While activist group Collective Shout supposedly got Tyler banned from Australia due to his lyrical content, confusion reigned due to conflicting reports from both the artist and Frontier Touring, who were set to host the rapper later that year.

Although Tyler, The Creator hasn’t been back to Australia since, England’s ban of the musician was much clearer, with Tyler being barred from the country for “3-5 years” due to the lyrical content of his 2009 mixtape Bastard, and 2011 album, Goblin.

In 2017 though, Tyler unleashed Flower Boy, his biggest critical success to date, reaching #8 on the Aussie charts and hitting #2 on the US charts. With singles like ‘Who Dat Boy’ and ‘911 / Mr. Lonely’, the record showed off a softer side to the artist, offering up soulful, jazzy tunes that were at odds with early tracks like ‘Yonkers’.

Now, following the surprise announcement of IGOR barely three weeks ago, Tyler, The Creator has released his latest album, which is already on the way to becoming another critical success.

Having debuted at #3 on the Aussie charts over the weekend, the record has peaked higher than any of his previous records in numerous countries, with places like the US and Canada still to release their charts.

With a slew of exceptional tracks on this new release, including the stunning ‘EARFQUAKE’, IGOR has managed to score triple j’s feature album slot this week.

But what do you think? Is it a worthy honour? Is it a tad overhyped? Or will we finally see Tyler, The Creator finally crack the Hottest 100 with this new record? Only time will tell…
