Marilyn Manson and a US police department have apparently played us all for fools, after footage was posted online yesterday of the shock-rocker being arrested, only for it to be revealed as a hoax.

The last few months have been interesting, to say the least, for Marilyn Manson. While the rocker kicked off the year by having an onstage meltdown, resulting in fans leading a chant of “Fuck you, Manson”, he soon found himself appearing onstage at Coachella, despite having apparently been banned from performing at the festival years earlier.

Then, just a matter of weeks ago, Manson made headlines again after he was filmed telling a fan at Spain’s Download Festival to take off his Avenged Sevenfold shirt because, “It’s not my band, it’s a different band.”

However, the rocker has now found himself at the forefront of music news once again after a rather confusing video was posted online.

Taking to Instagram yesterday, Marilyn Manson shared two videos to the service. The first video – captioned with the words “I don’t like the drugs…” – featured Manson smoking an unknown substance. This was soon followed up by another video (this time captioned with the words “…but the cops like me”), which seemed to show Manson being arrested by a police officer.

However, it appears as though the whole thing was an elaborate ruse, at least according to the Bangor Police Department, in the American state of Maine, where Manson had performed at the Impact Music Festival on Sunday.

“In the interest of saving us a whole lot of call-backs, Marilyn Manson was merely handcuffed and released immediately thereafter,” wrote Lt. Tim Cotton on Facebook.

“Officer Curtis Grenier, typically listening to only Enya, and a little bit of Oasis, was posted backstage during the Impact Music Festival. He did not recognize Mr. Manson without his stage makeup- our apologies.”

“Later, when approaching Rob Zombie, Officer Grenier was overheard saying, ‘I have never seen him in the Walking Dead, so I don’t know what the big deal is.'”

“Grenier has been spoken to and relieved of back-stage concert related duties for the foreseeable future,” the post concluded. “The Chief has determined that Grenier can work backstage during Lord of the Dance or anything related to Disney.”

The post was then signed off from ‘The Beautiful People’, indicating that maybe the Bangor Police Department like to crank a bit of Antichrist Superstar while cruising around town.

Marilyn Manson’s little joke (and recent appearance at the Impact Music Festival) comes only a handful of days after the rocker cancelled one of his concert appearances in Canada, only minutes before he was scheduled to go on.

This cancellation resulted in tourmate Rob Zombie performing a cover of the Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)’ (which Manson famously covered back in 1995), as a way to calm the crowd down.

While there’s no word yet as to when Marilyn Manson will be hitting up Australia for another run of shows, we can’t really imagine the rocker filming any videos like this with some Aussie cops.
