Let’s play a word association game. When I say “Eddie Vedder”, which word comes to mind? I will bet a flannelette shirt that you didn’t say “comedy”, “humour” or “wacky pranks involving major league baseball players.” If you used that final one, you would have been disqualified because it’s more than one word, but the point I’m trying to make is that Vedder is not usually known for his light-hearted sketch-comedy skills.
Yet Vedder, a long-time Chicago Cubs fan, teamed with players Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo over the weekend for an April Fool’s Day commercial for a fictional Bryzzo Souvenir Company, during which he attempts to write a jingle to capitalise on the team’s recent upswing in fortunes.
A lot of it doesn’t quite land unless you’re up on the Chicago Cubs’ current fiscal and on-field matters – still, it’s Eddie Vedder singing an extremely dumb song for an April Fools’ Day sketch, which is worth watching in itself.
