Just one of the many, many bands making their way to Australia for the Easter Weekend to play the massive Bluesfest 2013 lineup, American perennial live act Wilco have announced a special one-off show in Sydney, following on from fans swamping the box office for tickets to their two Melbourne shows in late March.
The inimitable Chicago sextet will grace the Sydney Opera House’s Concert Hall for a special one-off show on April 2nd, 2013 as part of Music at the House, performing their debut show at the iconic venue, delivering material from their critically acclaimed, Grammy Award winning 2011 album The Whole Love, as a broad selection of their rich back catalogue in what is set to be another polished, marathon show.
With the definitive Wilco roster now cemented since 2005, and catalogued on the band’s live album Kicking Television: Live In Chicago from the same year, the six-piece are one of those acts that has simply gotten better with age. Despite some turbulent lineup changes and interpersonal difficulties, the current lineup of ringleader Jeff Tweedy, long-term bassist John Stirratt, percussionist Glenn Kotche, keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, and guitar wizard Nels Cline – is one of the industry’s most respected, innovative, and hard-working bands.
The group are no strangers to Australia’s shores either, having become increasingly regular visitors since their inaugural trip in 2003 for the Big Day Out, and have continued to deliver riveting performances ever since. Stretching everything from delicate pop revelry to deeply furrowed experimentation, delightful harmonies to dissonant, spiky noise. The band’s transformation, from their origins humble mid-90s alt-country to a diverse musical unit, is one of music’s more interesting stories – with many musical high points along the way.
Wilco’s Sydney Opera House show is part of a contemporary program that will include concerts from Australia’s most cherished acts, such as Neil Finn and Paul Kelly’s double act, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ recently announced Australian Tour, the return of Dead Can Dance, and Sarah Blasko’s orchestral show.
Music at the House 2013 will also include international performances from First Aid Kit, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Kings of Convenience
