Kanye West collaborator YNW Melly has tested positive for COVID-19 whilst in a Florida jail. The rappers diagnosis was confirmed via a post on his Instagram. The rapper is currently awaiting trial for two counts of first-degree murder. His team have expressed that they plan to file a motion for restricted release.
“Melly has tested positive for COVID-19 today while awaiting his trial in Broward County Jail,” the post shared. “He’ll be filing a motion for restricted release in hopes of better care due to any jails not being prepared to treat this new virus. He hopes for your support and to recover soon #prayformelly send positive energy to him please.”
Melly pleaded not guilty to a double murder charge in March 2019, pertaining to the fatal shootings of his two close friends Christopher “Juvy” Thomas Jr. and Anthony “Sak” Williams. The State of Florida announced plans to seek the death penalty against Melly.
YNW Melly isn’t the first incarcerated musician to file for restricted release amid the COVID-19 crisis. Earlier today, Tekashi 6ix9ine was granted early release from prison due to COVID-19 concerns. The musician had a history of being hospitalised for asthma, which ultimately granted his release.
R. Kelly has also filed for release, citing age and “existing health issues” as a reason for him to be released on bail.
