Fresh from being announced for Meredith Music Festival, playing around the country as part of Parklife 2012, and releasing their critically acclaimed sophomore album Lonerism, Tame Impala are gearing up to hit the road again for a round of headline shows around the country.
Fronted by the enigmatic Kevin Parker, Tame Impala’s second album was recorded and produced entirely by Parker much like Innerspeaker, and their self-titled EP, and has been meet with commercial success and critical acclaim.
“Like their debut, Lonerism sounds best when taken in as a whole,” wrote Tone Deaf reviewer Al Matcott on Lonerism. “Preferably outside in a field, while the sun’s uninterrupted by clouds. And its October release almost guarantees it will become the soundtrack to a myriad of Australian summer road-trips.”
Recorded over two years in either a Paris apartment, Parker’s native Perth, or “studios, planes, hotels and homes around“ (depends who you ask); Lonerism is a reflection on the confusing but wonderful relationship between Parker as creative force behind Tame Impala, and the rest of the band.
It’s this juxtaposition between Tame Impala’s bright, expansive music and Parker’s thematic melancholy and subdued delivery which is one of the band’s most endearing qualities. And on the band’s second full length Lonerism, Tame Impala have never sounded brighter or more expansive; nor has Parker sounded so damn sad.
“Thematically, [Lonerism], is a lot more childlike and immature,” Parker told Tone Deaf. “The lyrics in Innerspeaker are coming from a grown person who is already out in the world doing their thing. When starting this album I didn’t feel the need to restrain on themes I felt like singing about.”
“When in the past I would have thought them too petty, now I just thought ‘well this song is quite emotional, it’s got this vibe of a child singing about the world’ so I’d follow that.”
Don’t miss your chance to see the magic live.
