Paul McCartney plays drums on Foo Fighters’ next album

Many jokes have been made about Paul McCartney being a better drummer than Ringo Starr (and he’s certainly demonstrated his chops on plenty of Beatles songs), and now the bassist and singer by trade has been brought on to sit behind the drums on the upcoming Foo Fighters album Concrete and Gold.

Speaking to ET Canada, Foo Fighters revealed that Macca came in to play an impromptu session, having collaborated with Dave Grohl several times in the past, an example of which you can watch below.

“He hadn’t even heard of the song,” they say (although it’s not clear which member is being quoted). “He comes in and Dave picked up an acoustic and showed him real quick.

“He sat on his special drum set that his tech set up for him. I sat there with a drumstick conducting. He did two takes.”

And while Dave Grohl has already hinted that “the biggest pop star in the world” will be making an appearance on the album, he apparently wasn’t talking about McCartney. “He or she sings backup on one of the heaviest songs on the record,” Grohl explains of the mystery star, “and we’re not telling anybody who it is.”

There’s not long to wait, though – Concrete and Gold is out September 15, their first album release since 2014’s Sonic Highways.

McCartney has also been keeping busy ahead of his long-awaited Australian tour by playing on his former bandmate Ringo Starr’s new single, while Foo Fighters have been trying (and failing) to collaborate with ex-Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, but have at least managed to add him to the lineup of their very own rock festival.
