After many months of tumult, The Smashing Pumpkins recently reunited classic lineup finally took the stage last night in Las Angeles. The band, now featuring Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin for the first time since 2000, played an impromptu show at the LA Troubadour to 400 people, tearing through a slew of Pumpkins classics.
The show was announced less than 24-hours prior to its commencement, with Amoeba Records selling wristbands for the show during the day to lucky fans.
Their setlist included new tracks ‘Solara’ and ‘Drown’ off the soundtrack to Cameron Crowe’s Singles, as well as Pumpkins fan favourites like ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’, ‘Soma’ and ‘Today’. Earlier this year, Billy Corgan took to Instagram to ask fans for help with compiling a setlist for the upcoming Shiny And Oh So Bright tour.
The band also brought Davey Havok of AFI onstage to perform a cover of Joy Division’s ‘Transmission’.
According to Consequence Of Sound, phones and cameras were collected at the door, however, since the gig multiple photos and videos have surfaced online. They also reported that the band are set to play another intimate pop up show tonight, inspired by the house party in the “1979” music video.
Earlier this month, The Smashing Pumpkins released their first single off their upcoming reunion release, ‘Solara’, produced by the legendary Rick Rubin.
