After many false-starts and postponements, Tekashi 6ix9ine has unveiled his second new single of 2020. The trap-influenced ‘Trollz’ features a guest verse from Nicki Minaj, who previously appeared on 6ix9ine’s 2018 single ‘Fefe’.
The song’s delayed release is likely due to the production of its hyper-coloured music video, which features both 6ix9ine and Minaj, as well as some other women twerking in a hot tub.
‘Trollz’ was originally slated for release on May 22nd before getting pushed back and officially confirmed for Friday, May 29th. But he missed that deadline too and proposed June 5th as the new release date. However, given the tenor of the Black Lives Matter protests around the USA, 6ix9ine decided to bump it back another week.
Anyway, it’s here now, so what does the famously controversial 6ix9ine have to say for himself? Not a whole lot, aside from boasting about his abundant supply of cash, cars, and girls who can’t get enough of him. He does, however, find space to take a swipe at his haters.
“You the type of n***a that I never wanna be like / You a type of b*tch that will never get a reply / Hi, hater, bye, hater, vroom,” screams 6ix9ine at the end of his one proper verse.
Minaj throws down some more memorable bars during her verse. This declaration of superiority is a standout: “My flow’s still sick, I ain’t talkin’ a pandemic,” she raps. “I write my own lyrics, a lot of these b*tches gimmicks / They study Nicki style, now all of them wan’ mimic.”
6ix9ine was released from prison on April 2nd – approximately four months ahead of schedule – and ‘Trollz’ follows the rapper’s record-breaking comeback single ‘GOOBA’. He hasn’t been able to avoid controversy over the past couple of months, though. ‘GOOBA’ debuted at number three in the US Billboard Hot 100, with Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber’s ‘Stuck With U’ in top spot. This led 6ix9ine to accuse both Billboard and Grande of corruption.
