Brisbane alt-rock outfit Bean Magazine aren’t pulling punches on their latest release, “Ashamed That You Hate It”, a sardonic slow-burn that unpacks the sting of brutal honesty — especially when it hits close to home.
The single arrives hot on the heels of the announcement of their third EP, FOLLY, set to drop Friday, June 6th via Purple Phase/Warner Music Australia.
Drenched in jangly guitars and a distinctly ’90s indie-rock haze, “Ashamed That You Hate It” captures the awkward ache of showing your art to someone you love — and watching them flinch.
“Those close are often the harshest critics,” says frontman Henry Creamer. “Essentially I showed someone dear to me our first properly recorded music and I could just tell it wasn’t for them… This song is like a sarcastic dig at that. It’s fun to poke at entitlement — especially your own.”
The single joins earlier releases “Share You” and “Free As Hell” on FOLLY, a seven-track offering that captures the band’s ability to balance guitar-driven catharsis with moments of self-deprecating clarity. It’s a release about embracing your inner fool, with Creamer describing it as “an ode to stepping back and not taking yourself too seriously — especially when your mind is crowded with self-defeatist thoughts.”
Produced by Ball Park Music’s Sam Cromack, FOLLY also reunites the band with the sonic architect behind last year’s In The Shade EP. That release helped sharpen Bean Magazine’s distinctive blend of punk energy, sensitive lyricism, and classic rock swagger — a formula that’s seen them quickly become a name to know on Australia’s indie circuit.
Creamer, along with Gabrielle Beiers (drums) and Seb Baren (bass), kicked off a huge 28-date national tour supporting Ball Park Music in Tasmania last weekend, with the run set to hit every major state and territory throughout July. The tour marks another milestone in a busy 12 months for the band, following supports with The Rubens, Hockey Dad, and Rum Jungle, plus festival slots at BIGSOUND and SXSW Sydney.
“Ashamed That You Hate It” is available to stream on all platforms. FOLLY is also available to pre-save now.
