It has been a road of ups and downs with the Deftones upcoming ninth studio album. Now, it’s looking like there could be further delays, as the band is unsure about upcoming deadlines.
First off, in November, the American alt-metal band Deftones announced that they would “definitely” have a new album out in 2020. Then, in February, the outfit was proud to bring back long-time producer Terry Date to the table.
Additionally, only last month the said that the album was in its final mixing stages, and it wouldn’t be long until the release. Now, the collective is saying that they’re unsure if the album will hit its deadlines, after all.
“We started the record last summer and we, I mean, even before that we were taking our time and just doing at our leisure,” frontman Chino Moreno said in an interview with Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe.
With COVID-19 currently sees everyone following social distancing standards, drummer Abe Cunningham has noted that it’s a bit hard to get things going, saying “given the current situation, it’s been a bit difficult to get everyone in the same room. We can’t. So, we’re at least still doing that.”
“We just started the mixing process a couple of months back. It worked out as far as doing it remote. Our producer, Terry Date, who’s doing the record, he’s in Seattle. As a band, we’re all spread out anyways.”
“Usually it would be a little more expedited had we all been able to be in the same room at the same time, but it’s working out and he just finished his first full round of mixing the whole record and now it’s going back to little things and particular things on each song,” he continued.

“So we’re using the time, trying to at least, by still working on the record and there’s no rush obviously for us to get out and do anything. So we’re just taking our time with it.”
Luckily, even with the delays, we already know a little bit about what’s in store for this new album, as frontman Chino Morino spoke to Kerrang! (via The PRP) that the sound they’re going for will end up being akin to their 2000s White Pony.
“We haven’t really discussed it too deeply other than we plan on it coming out this summer [Aussie winter]. It’s not looking like we’re going to be able to get out there this summer to support it. So does it make sense to put it out when you can’t support it? Maybe. Maybe not. I don’t know.”
