We’ve written extensively in the past about our disdain for ticket scalpers. Considering that they are the bane of the music-lover’s existence, one of the most satisfying things to witness is when these scalpers manage to get their much-deserved comeuppance, as we witnessed yesterday thanks to FOMO Festival.
As Pedestrian reports, a punter by the name of Reilly decided to hit up Gumtree with the intent of selling his ticket to US rapper Post Malone’s Brisbane show. Considering that these tickets were selling for $71 a pop, his attempts to scalp his ticket for $350 did not go unnoticed by tour presenter FOMO Festival, who were quick to put and end to Reilly’s escapade.
In some grand display of ingenuity, Reilly decided to post an image of his order number on Gumtree, which gave FOMO Festival the edge they needed to go ahead and cancel his order.
“Quick word of advice.. If you’re like Reilly and think you can rip people off selling one ticket for $350 but put up a photo up which includes your order number, then you’ve made our job easy and your ticket is going to being cancelled,” FOMO wrote on Facebook.
“Scalping: Don’t do and don’t support it.”
Upon making their post on Facebook, FOMO Festival were inundated with people either congratulating them on their efforts, or using the post as an opportunity to call out other scalpers. One user posted a screenshot of ticket resale website Viagogo, where tickets were listed for $2,657 each. FOMO were quick to respond, simply stating “Get us a name and a number of the person selling and we’ll cancel these too.”
While ticket-scalping is still a problem (though with the rise of sites like Twickets, it might soon be entering a downward spiral), it’s refreshing to see promoters such as FOMO Festival exercising their power and bringing the hammer down on scalpers who attempt to scam the average punter. Good on you, FOMO.
