More local artists are set for another Aussie invasion as they are invited to hit music industry conference South By Southwest (SXSW), which has fast become one of the biggest and most influential events in the music world.
Following on from opening up their band registrations for SXSW 2014, held next 7th to the 16th March, the first epic list of artists invited to perform at the 28th edition of the annual Austin, Texas gathering has been announced; an impressive list of more than 180 acts that will be gracing the many stages and showcases of the annual conference, with many more names on the way well before the final tally is counted.
The exhaustive list contains a number of recognisable names, including forthcoming Falls Festival visitors London Grammar, alt-rock veterans Urge Overkill (did Pulp Fiction just pop into your head?), INVSN – the new band from The Refused’s Daniel Lyxzén, metal masters Bring Me The Horizon and Crossfaith, from Britain and Japan respectively (who just wrapped Down Under dates together), as well as the Australian-bred, Brighton-based quartet Kins.
More exciting though, is the appearance of six Australian artists among the 180+ invited SXSW 2014 acts, who have the honour of being among the first of a touted 2,000 international performers gracing over 100 stages, with organisers expecting to add another 30 Australian acts to their invitations list.
Leading the pack is Vance Joy, the non de plume for Melbourne singer-songwriter James Keogh, who has enjoyed a banner year following the breakout success of his debut EP God Loves You When You’re Dancing; including sold-out national tours, an unprecedented US record label deal, and more recently, claiming two gongs at the 2013 AIR Awards for Breakthrough Independent Artist and Best Independent Single/EP. More exciting though, is the appearance of six Australian artists among the 180+ invited SXSW 2014 acts… organisers expecting to add another 30 Australian acts
Also flying the flag for Melbourne is Money For Rope, the mighty dual-drumming, 24-limbed rock favourites have also enjoyed a successful 2013 following the release of their eponymous debut album last year making them one of the most played acts on Triple J Unearthed. The sextet have also built an enviable following thanks to their hugely enjoyable live show, carving out sizeable crowds through appearances at this year’s Big Day Out, Golden Plains, and Boogie festivals.
The Swiss, the dance music duo of Sydneysiders Luke Million and Tony Mitolo, have also been asked to jet to Austin, Texas next year. The pair, who have issued releases through tastemaking indie labels Modular and Kitsune, recently dropped their latest slice of disco funk with the Elouisa EP, following on from their hit single ‘Bubble Bath’
Also up for SXSW 2014 is Sydney pop craftsman Josef Salvat. Currently on tour in Europe supporting Tom Odell, the 24-year-old former law student has been enjoying some online buzz thanks to his introductory singles ‘This Life‘ and ‘Hustler‘ and recently relocated to London to conduct his neo-pop conquest through a spate of touring.
Rounding out the Aussie contingent is self-described ‘kick ass garage rock n roll’ outfit The Chevelles, and People Of Letters, the Melbourne based band representing the Women Of Letters project, a Melbourne group co-curated by The Age writers Marieke Hardy and Michaela McGuire that brings together musicians, writers, politicians and comedians in celebration of the lost art of letter-writing.
People Of Letters, along with Vance Joy, Money For Rope, The Swiss, Josef Salvat, and The Chevelles look set to follow in the foot-steps of Aussie artists that enjoyed the exposure and networking that SXSW has provided such break-out acts like Chet Faker, Big Scary, Kimbra, Alabama Shaks, Haim, Mumford & Sons and many more.
As well as hosting some of music’s biggest names, this year featuring the likes of Prince, Justin Timberlake, and Bruce Springsteen, SXSW also offers a range of invaluable information and sources through its many talks, panels, and seminars.
Following on from the killer keynote address from Dave Grohl, discussing Nirvana, ‘Gangnam Style’ and “finding your voice”, the first list of speakers at SXSW 2014 includes Jeff Price (Audiam), Tom Windish, (Producer Just Blaze), Matthew Adell (Beatport), Axel Dauchez (Deezer), Rebecca Rienks (E!), David Lowery (Cracker), Tom Silverman (Tommy Boy Records/New Music Seminar), and Jack Conte (Pomplamoose/Patreon) in the first round list (view in full here).
