We caught up with the Australian actor-turned-musician Nicholas Hamilton to find out more about his burgeoning music career.

Nicholas Hamilton is the definition of multi-talented. The NSW-born star broke into Hollywood at the tender age of 16, starring in Captain Fantastic alongside Aragorn himself, Viggo Mortensen. An even bigger role arrived soon after, playing Henry Bowers in the blockbuster horror films IT and IT Chapter Two.

Hamilton returned to Australia earlier this year and is now ready to showcase his musical talents. His new single, ‘In Line’, came out in April, and blends the smoothness of Ruel with the earnest pop of George Ezra.

The song is a look back at the life-altering move to the U.S. that Hamilton underwent. “I wrote this song just after I moved to the U.S.,” he explained. “It’s all too fitting, as the song is about how I felt before and after getting on that plane to come over to the States and start my independent, adult life.

I was battling my own headstrong decisions about making that leap and leaving my family, friends and childhood behind.  The whole track is me singing to my brain, which was something I didn’t lean into until later on in the writing process.”

After the release of ‘In Line’, we thought it was a good time to catch up with the star as part of our popular Get To Know series to find out more about him.

How did your artist name come about?

Got it for my birthday. My first one.

How would you describe your music to your grandma?

“Remember me? The grandson? Blonde hair, blue eyes? Yeah, that one. Listen to this, it’s like music but if I made it.”

Tell us about a few of your tracks; their titles and what they’re about?

I’ve released three singles so far. ‘Different Year’, which is about dealing with feeling alone and depressed in a pandemic, or in any other scenario where one feels alone and depressed. ‘noRoom’, which is a break-up song about a break-up I had where I broke up with a guy who had no room in his head for me so we broke up. This most recent one, ‘In Line’, is a little pop-rocky diary entry I wrote when I was moving from Australia to LA and how shit-scared I was about doing so.

What do you love about your hometown?

It’s got my family and friends in it. I knew nothing about leaving anywhere else before I moved to LA when I was 18 so it’s a massive chunk of me. It’s a tiny village, population of about 4000, so I know everyone in it, which is a blessing and a curse. Definitely more of an LA boy.

Career highlight so far?

It’s one of two things. Meeting Meryl Streep at the SAG Awards in 2017, or the food at the SAG Awards in 2016. Both were incredible.

Fave non-music hobby?

Acting, really. But both are careers of mine. My other other hobby is anything related to sport. Preferably mini versions of regular-sized sports. Putt Putt, Ping Pong, and the like.

What’s on your dream rider?

Unlimited Manhattans and Moscow Mules, and Lewis Capaldi swooning me before I go onstage.

Dream music collaboration?

See above. Lewis Capaldi, 1000%. I love Ed Sheeran and Yebba too. Jordan Mackampa, Aloe Blacc, Quinn XCII.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully doing the same thing, just better, and more of it.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

‘Easy’ by The Commodores.

What’s on the cards for the future?

More music! Next single comes out next month, then an EP after that, hopefully interspersed with some live shows and film/tv projects while I’m back in Australia. That or a little nap. A nap would be nice.
