Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn has teamed up with his old Blur bandmate Graham Coxon for a rendition of the band’s classic hit, ‘Song 2’.

It’s currently been about three years since Blur last played live, and fans have been wondering just when we might be hearing new music from the group.

While Gorillaz have released not one, but two new albums since then, and The Good, The Bad & The Queen are set to release a new record next month, Damon Albarn hasn’t written off a new Blur record. In fact, just a couple of months ago, he explained that “Whenever Graham [Coxon, Blur guitarist] is around, I’m up to playing music with him.”

With that in mind, you can understand why fans were pretty excited to see the closest thing to a Blur reunion in three years recently.

Performing in Los Angeles on Saturday for their Demon Days Festival, Gorillaz welcomed quite a number of special guests to the stage. From De La Soul to DRAM, and from George Benson to Bootie Brown, it was quite a star-studded affair. However, one special guest was someone that no one had expected.

Appearing during the group’s encore, Blur’s Graham Coxon took to the stage to perform guitar on cover of the band’s 1997 classic single, ‘Song 2’.

“We’re going to try a bit of cross pollination,” Albarn explained before he teased the audience with a drastically-different cover. “This all really new and fresh to us.” However, following a brief musical interlude, Gorillaz jumped into a crushing rendition of the tune, blowing fans away in the process.

While there’s no word of a fully-fledged Blur reunion yet, it almost looks as though Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon are itching to get back onstage together to deliver their classic tunes to their eager fans.
