Canadian musician Grimes has revealed her desire to quit the traditional method of touring, instead continuing to bring her music to her fans as a hologram.

Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of talk about hologram tours. While Tupac Shakur’s ‘appearance’ at Coachella in 2012 undoubtedly popularised the notion, we’ve seen names like ABBA, Ronnie James Dio, Prince, and even Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison bring the idea back to our minds.

However, while this has been a great way for late musicians and disbanded groups to bring their music to their fans, Canadian musician Grimes has asked the burning question; “Why do artists have to be dead before they do a hologram tour?”

In a recent interview with Flaunt, the artist currently known as c has expressed her desire to turn her back on the live stage and return as a hologram.

“I wanna retire from touring,” she explained, citing stage fright and stress as the reason for this decision. “I wanna do a hologram tour. Why do we keep doing them for dead artists instead of living ones who have stage fright?”

“It’s nightmarish. Apocalyptic. Terrifying, horrible. I can’t hear clapping or cheers—I just hear an echo chamber of death. I black out. Dissociation—I can’t tell what’s happening.”

“After a show I’m always thinking, What happened? And people are like ‘It’s ok!’”

“I know people like the authenticity of live performance, and I do too,” she continued. “But I’m not a good performer. I’m a director who accidentally fell into this position, and now it’s too late to change.”

“So I need to Gorillaz it—I need to find a way to not have to do the Beyoncé thing as much.”

For most fans of the artist (apparently) formerly known as Grimes, this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, with the musician recently expressing her desire to “kill off” her current musical persona, and instead reinvent herself, with her current moniker of c being merely “an intermediate name.”

For Australian fans of Grimes/c, it’s been well over three years since we saw her on our shores. However, it’s looking like her plans for the future might not involve a return in the traditional sense.

At this stage, it’s anyone guess what the future might hold, but we might know more when new album Miss Anthropocene drops later this year.
