Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell has revealed that the band are set to take some well-deserved time off, reaching the end of the touring cycle of their latest record.
This time last year, Alice In Chains were gearing up to release their latest album, Rainier Fog. Their first record in five years, the release came following some pretty solid years of touring, having only taken time off back in 2011 and 2012.
However, with the band’s recent touring cycle reaching its end, guitarist Jerry Cantrell has revealed that the members of Alice In Chains are looking set to put their feet up for a well-deserved break.
Speaking to Meltdown from Detroit’s WRIF radio station (via Blabbermouth), Cantrell explained that while the band have been stoked to visit and perform in such interesting locations, they’re eager for a bit of a rest.
“Album cycles for us generally are about three or four years long,” Cantrell explained. “When we’re done with a tour, we usually take some time for ourselves.
“And then you probably won’t see us for a while, because we’ll take some time off, and then we’ll probably start writing some music and recording it. And that usually takes a couple of years. And then we’ll put it out and then go rock it for a couple of years.
“We’re coming to the end of the cycle. It’s been a great run. We made a really great record that we’re proud of, and people have responded to it really positively.
“We’ve gone around the globe a few times already; this was basically our second trip around everywhere.”

Alice In Chains made their most recent visit to Australia back in March, performing as part of the Download Festival lineup, and even making their first-ever appearance over to New Zealand in the process, having cancelled a trip to the country back in 1993.
“You’d be surprised, with every band, with all of the touring that you do throughout your lifetime, that you haven’t been everywhere, but you haven’t,” Jerry Cantrell added.
“And on this one, we knocked a couple of cherries off. We never played Russia before, and we got to play Saint Petersburg and Moscow.
“We had to cancel Auckland, New Zealand early on in our tour, because Sean [Kinney, drummer] had injured his elbow at the end of an Australian tour. And so we played that for the first time.”
At this stage, Alice In Chains have tour dates booked through to the start of September. Past that, it’s anyone’s guess when we may see them on the stage, or hear them on our stereo again.
