Keen to get your mitts on an iconic piece of music history? Well, you can, if you’ve got enough cash on hand to purchase Kurt Cobain’s guitar used in the famous MTV Unplugged In New York.
Think that your music collection is missing one key piece, and that it’s probably Nirvana related? Well, you’ve come to the right place, as we’re here to tell you that his iconic guitar played during the outfit’s famous MTV Unplugged In New York performance will be heading to auction next month.
The infamous guitar comes to auction after recently the centre of a legal battle between Kurt Cobain’s daughter Frances Bean and her ex-husband Isaiah Silva. The ex tried to sue multiple people who he pinned as breaking into his home to steal the legendary piece of Nirvana history and attempt to kill him.
The long list of accused included Courtney Love and her manager Sam Lufti, as well as many others including actor Ross Butler. Court documents revealed that Silva eventually won the settlement, in addition to gaining ownership of the historic guitar. Even though Love has called the guitar a “treasured heirloom” of her family, it has been put into auction.
Sold by Juieln’s Auctions, the 1959 Martin D-18E guitar will be up for sale in June as part of the “Music Icons” sale. Keen to have it for your own collection? Starting bids are rumoured to begin at a cool $1,000,000, so dig deep.
Don’t have that kind of cash on hand? The guitar will be up for display at two key spots before it’s set to be auctioned. If you’re in London, it’ll be at Piccadilly Circus Hard Rock Cafe May 15th-31st, and in Beverly Hills, California at Julien’s Auctions June 15th-19th.
“This important guitar has earned its rightful place in rock’n’roll history as the instrument played by one of rock’s most influential musicians and icons in one of the greatest and most memorable live performances of all time,” Julien’s Auctions has stated.
