More than 20 years after they made history with their first performance, Metallica have reunited with the San Francisco Symphony for their highly-anticipated S&M² show.

Back in April of 1999, Metallica broke new ground when they performed with the San Francisco Symphony for a night that combined orchestral instrumentation with heavy metal.

Dubbed S&M due to it pairing the ‘symphony’ with ‘Metallica’, the performance was a huge moment in the band’s history, offering longtime fans a whole new way to hear many of these classic tracks, alongside a pair of new tunes.

Earlier this year though, it was announced that history would indeed repeat, with the band announcing S&M² as a way to help open the newest San Francisco arena, the Chase Centre.

Initially set to be a one-off, the popularity led to a second date being added, while it was recently announced that the event would later hit cinemas worldwide. On Friday night though, the band stood before conductor Michael Tilson Thomas for a night that audiences wouldn’t soon forget.

Kicking things off with the typical rendition of Ennio Morricone’s ‘The Ecstasy Of Gold’, the band took fans on a trip down memory lane, delivering a mammoth set that – for the first time ever – consisted of songs from every one of their studio albums, plus 1999’s S&M.

While famous tracks like ‘No Leaf Clover’ got a look-in, so too did tracks from the likes of St. Anger and Death Magnetic, while Metallica also joined in for a rendition of Alexander Mosolov’s ‘Iron Foundry’ with the orchestra.

Chuck in performances of tracks like ‘(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth’ for the first time in six years, and you’ve got one setlist that most diehard fans would absolutely dream of.

Sadly though, there were no renditions of the S&M favourite ‘- Human’, though it did give fans a chance to relive a piece of musical history with this updated classical take on the band’s songs.

With another performance set to take place on Sunday night, it remains to be seen whether the cinematic release will feature highlights from the two, or if it will simply be the entirety of the first.

Whatever the case, screenings begin on October 7th, just days before Metallica return to Australia for their first Aussie tour since 2013. Sadly, they won’t feature the San Francisco Symphony, but you can bet it’ll be a show you won’t be forgetting any time soon either.
