Mudhoney have announced that they will be releasing their new full length studio album this April. The bands ninth LP, entitled Vanishing Point, is due for release April 5th through Sub Pop via Inertia in Australia, it’s the grunge outfit’s first release since their last album The Lucky Ones back in 2008.
To coincide with the anouncement of the new record, Mudhoney have released a short 40 second trailer for the release (which you can view above). The video for the album features a man violently inserting a Mudhoney cassette tape into his portable cassette player after it falls from the sky and hits him in the head.
The man listens to the tape, proceeds to go insane and ends up tearing it out and ripping it up. As if that wasn’t strange enough, all this is casually observed by frontman Mark Arm, who then just walks away.
As one of the few bands still remaining from the golden era of grunge, the band’s press release notes Mudhoney “keep on kicking out the garage-rocking, punk-infused, psycho-blues jams. They ignore the trends of the day in favour of scorching feedback, rumbling bass and the inimitable voice of Mark Arm.”
Reassuring fans that the band still has plenty to bring to the table with their new release, Vanishing Point is an album written by a band who has been put through the wringer and encounted their fair share of rock’n’roll and industry experiences.“Mudhoney ignore the trends of the day in favour of scorching feedback, rumbling bass and the inimitable voice of Mark Arm.”
In an interview with Seattles’ CBS Local, Arm remarks on some of the guitar work that features on the new record; “I play guitar on four songs out of the ten. I really like being able to hop around and not play guitar…but I also like playing guitar,” he says.
“Initially Steve [Turner] kinda insisted that I play guitar when I was in a band with him before Green River; We both played guitar in that band [Mr. Epp and The Calculations], and I think he wanted to tether me down a little bit. Still though, in the early days of Mudhoney, we’d go flailing into the crowd with our guitars, but after a while you stop doing that ’cause it hurts.”
The new rleease will also coincide with the 25th anniversary of both the band and indie label Sub Pop records who have had an integral part in shaping the genre of grunge and its associated music scenes.
The greatly anticipated record is slated for release in May this year, and is available for pre-order from Sub Pop’s website, and is the latest in a string of top tier albums due in 2013.
There’s the latest from Iggy and the Stooges, new material from Brooklyn outfit The National, the latest from Parisian indie popsters Phoenix, the fifth LP from New Yorkers The Strokes, David Bowie’s first new album in a decade, French electronic duo Daft Punk, and anticipated releases from the likes of Vampire Weekend, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and The Knife’s 98 minute opus, Shaking The Habitual.
Similarly we can see brand new tunes from Australian hopefuls including the Cat Empire’s latest, the second album from Melbourne twosome Big Scary, The Drones’ tour backed I See Seaweed, and a heap of new albums from the likes of Bernard Fanning, Birds of Tokyo, Hermitude, Airbourne, Super Wild Horses, and a slew of new material from Perth outfit Pond.
