A number of local artists are set to continue the Aussie invasion, with 10 more bands invited to attend the annual South By Southwest (SXSW) music industry conference next year.

Following on from six Aussie bands being named to hit what has fast become one of the biggest and most influential events in the music world, another 11 Aussie artists have cropped up in the second round of acts invited to perform at SXSW 2014.

The new additions bring the total SXSW 2014 tally to over 500 bands jetting their way to Austin, Texas for SXSW, taking place Tuesday 11th March to Sunday 16th March in 2014, with Gary Numan being the biggest name among the second round announcement.

Besides the influential electronic and industrial music forefather, who arrives with his first new album since 2006 in Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind), the 28th edition of the annual gathering will see bands from all over the lucky country jetting overseas.

The most recognisable name flying the Aussie flag among the new SXSW 2014 lineup additions is Sydney nu-folkies, Boy & Bear, who head to Austin following the release of their second, J Award-nominated, studio album, Harlequin Dream. The record also has the five-piece up for two awards – for Best Group and Best Rock Album – at next month’s 27th Annual ARIA Awards.

The Growl, featuring Cam Avery (of fellow WA musical successes Tame Impala and Pond), are also on SXSW’s invite list. The band have just finished a successful national trek, the Douse The Lamps National Tour, named after the latest single to be lifted from the band’s debut album What Would Christ Do??, and tonight support Kings Of Leon at their sole Sydney Enmore Theatre show that sold out in 40 seconds flatThe 11 Aussie artists join the previously announced six artists on the SXSW 2014 bill… organisers expecting to add another 15 or so…

A number of Melbourne-based artists are also in with SXSW 2014 invites. Singer-songwriter Helen Croome, best known as Gossling, has just released her debut album Harvest Of Gold; the 10-track collection described as “a promising offering” by our Tone Deaf reviewer.

Melbourne rock outfit The Delta Riggs have also issued their debut album this year, Hex Love Killer, released by the band’s own Rah Rah Radio label, which conveys “the sweet sound of sweat, floor grime and spilt beers” perfectly, says our reviewer, including album highlight and Triple J favourite ‘America’, (how fitting).

On the heavier end of the spectrum is Melbourne thrash metal masters King Parrot. With a festival-hewn live show and a nomination for Best Heavy Album at (tonight’s) The Age/Music Victoria Awards for their latest album Bite Your Head Off, King Parrot are sure to wow the industry crowds and music-lovers.

Also on the SXSW 2014 lineup is Oh Mercy, with the Alexander Gow-fronted group having played their last live shows this past May before upping sticks and relocating overseas and taking a break from the listening public after releasing their highly acclaimed third album and “intoxicating listen” Deep Heat

Both Touch Sensitive and What So Not will be repping what the globe-conquering Flume described as the ‘Australian sound’, not so much a surprise given that both feature alongside Flume on the Future Classic label roster, with What So Not even being the Sydney beat-maker’s sometime-side-project alongside DJ/producer Emoh Instead.

Rounding out the list of Aussie artists is the punky sounds of previous SXSW alumni Dune Rats, the multi-talented rapper Kid Mac, and direct from St Kilda, worldwide street performer Dub Fx.

The 11 Aussie artists join the previously announced six artists on the SXSW 2014 bill – including Vance Joy, Money For Rope, and The Swiss – bringing the total Aussie contingent to 16 acts who have the honour of being among a touted 2,000 international performers gracing over 100 stages, with organisers expecting to add another 15 or so Australian acts to their invitations list in the coming months.

Those 16 local artists look set to follow in the foot-steps of Aussie artists that enjoyed the exposure and networking that SXSW has provided such break-out success to artists like Chet Faker, Big Scary, Kimbra, Alabama Shakes, Haim, Mumford & Sons and many more.

As well as hosting some of music’s biggest names – this year’s event featured the likes of Prince, Bruce Springsteen, and a killer keynote address from Dave Grohl, – SXSW also offers a range of invaluable information and sources through its many talks, panels, and seminars (view in full here).

Conference registrations and hotel requests are now being accepted. For more information on every aspect of SXSW, please go to http://www.sxsw.com.
