The Drones have been keeping very busy since playing (and curating) the Australian return of All Tomorrow’s Parties this past February and releasing their latest album I See Seaweed, “the perfect Drones album, and one of the year’s best releases – Australian or otherwise,” according to our Tone Deaf review.
The band’s sixth studio album has been the catalyst for extensive touring, both for their own national headline tour last April and a run of festival appearances including Barcelona’s Primavera Sound and Tasmania’s inaugural Dark MOFO, playing selections from their critically acclaimed new album as well as cuts from their equally revered back catalogue.
The Drones are now set to continue their touring for the remainder of the year, and embarking on their second headline tour for 2013 to celebrate the release of their new single. The tour now adds extra dates to their already announced run of shows, adding new shows in Newcastle and Canberra to the tour itinerary, with Melbourne rock six-piece Money For Rope supporting.
‘A Moat You Can Stand In’ is the second single from I See Seaweed, a searing rock track that provides a “breakneck speed bump” in the album, as our Tone Deaf scribe put it, “where every instrument barks for attention in the equivalent of a musical bar-fight as Gareth Liddiard spews forth vowels a second.”
A timely reminder of the band’s evolution, the single’s release coincides with the newly-expanded quintet’s newest national headline tour, starting with two Hi Fi Bar shows in Melbourne before rolling through Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, and Sydney.
Joining them as special guests will be Melbourne’s gloomy buy gorgeous Harmony, who have been working on a new studio album; meaning there could be some new material from the band as they warm the stage for The Drones across capital cities (except the aforementioned Canberra and Newcastle shows).
With a ferociously engaging live show based on of Australia’s most enviable songbooks, the Drones are often hailed as “the nation’s best live band.” If you’ve seen them before, you’ll know why that isn’t hyperbole, and if you don’t – then be sure to get ticket and find out for yourself firsthand
