Their names are already synonymous with different generations of English rock music, but Saturday night saw Oasis’ Noel Gallagher teaming up with The Jam’s Paul Weller to cover a couple of timeless rock classics.

Over the weekend, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds served as one of the headlining acts at Bristol’s The Downs Festival in England’s South West. One of the other acts performing on the same bill happened to be none other than Paul Weller, the iconic frontman for mod revival group The Jam.

As Noel Gallagher closed in on the end of his set, he invited Paul Weller onstage to perform a cover of The Jam’s 1982 hit, ‘Town Called Malice’.

Of course, this wouldn’t have surprised too many fans, especially considering how Paul Weller gushed over Noel Gallagher’s songwriting capabilities in an interview earlier this year.

“I’ve liked everything he’s done solo,” Weller told NME in February. “I don’t really need to talk about what a great songwriter he is, because everyone knows that. But, for me, he’s got better.

“I think his songs now have got a different sort of depth to them; lyrically as well. Especially the new one. I really like the words on it. He’s got his own thing together.”

Following the pair’s performance of The Jam’s iconic hit, Paul Weller stuck around to help close out Noel Gallagher’s set, which featured a cover of The Beatles’ ‘All You Need Is Love’. Needless to say, fans in attendance were definitely treated to something rather special.

In related news, this performance comes just a couple of weeks after Noel Gallagher revealed he rediscovered a solo album he had once recorded, but thought that had been destroyed.

“I did find a copy of it recently in a sock draw,” Gallagher explained to Matt Morgan. “The masters, somebody has them, the masters have not been destroyed – but it won’t be coming out any time soon.”

“It might be nice to go back and revisit it in years to come, because ‘Shoot A Hole Into The Sun’ is fucking great and there might be more stuff like that in there,” he continued. “Best to give it a bit of distance though I think.”

“It just wasn’t right for the time,” he explained when pressed for more info about why the record had been scrapped to begin with.

Whatever the case, if he ever wants to team up with Paul Weller in the studio, we certainly won’t be complaining.
