With the 2021 Hottest 100 set to take place on January 22nd, 2022, we here at Tone Deaf have decided to take a stroll down memory lane, recapping the countdowns of yesteryear in the lead-up to the latest edition of musical democracy. Today, we’re taking a look back at the Hottest 100 of 1993.
Taking place in January of 1994, the triple j Hottest of 1993 was the first annual countdown held by the station which limited votes to songs released in the last year.
After kicking things off in 1989 with a series of ‘All-Time’ countdowns, the station decided to change pace in 1991 after they realised there wasn’t a whole lot of variety at the pointy end of things.
Following a bit of a gap year in 1992, triple j brought the countdown back in early 1994, kicking off an annual tradition that continues to this day.
While this inaugural countdown was met with plenty of anticipation (attracting 50,000 votes in the process), it’s long been regarded by listeners as one of the most infamous countdowns, thanks in part to its #1 track.
While the top ten consisted of songs by U2, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine, The Cranberries, The Cruel Sea, and Radiohead, the #1 spot was ultimately taken out by US comedian Denis Leary, and his divisive novelty track ‘Asshole’.
However, when you consider that Denis Learly’s sole entry scored him the highest spot possible, it gives him one of the greatest averages out of any artist to appear in a Hottest 100 to date. Say what you will about ‘Asshole’, but it’s given us a record that might not be equalled for some time!

Interestingly, this countdown also boasted something of another interesting milestone, featuring the oldest artist in a countdown to date.
Appearing at #100, Van Morrison teamed up with John Lee Hooker for a rendition of ‘Gloria’. At the time of the countdown, Hooker was 76 years old, making him the most seasoned entrant to date.
At the end of the day, triple j’s Hottest 100 for 1993 featured songs by 84 different artists from a total of 11 countries, including 43 from the USA, 24 from Australia and 18 from England.
Australia’s achievement of just 24 tracks in a countdown is their lowest to date, while Jamaica featured twice in the countdown – a record that still stands today.
In addition to being the highest-charting Aussie act in the countdown, The Cruel Sea were also the act that appeared the most, achieving three entries in the list. R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe also shared a similar achievement, appearing twice with his regular band, and once on Neneh Cherry’s ‘Trout’.

Meanwhile, The Badloves, Cypress Hill, Dave Graney ‘n’ The Coral Snakes, Dinosaur Jr., Headless Chickens, King Missile, Living Colour, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, R.E.M.,Rage Against The Machine, Suede, and U2 all appeared twice in the countdown.
A number of other artists, including Tool’s Danny Carey and Maynard James Keenan, and Juliana Hatfield appeared with a couple of different bands, while Kate Bush sort of appeared twice, showing up once as a solo act, and once after being sampled in the Utah Saints’ ‘Something Good’.
Also, if you’re keen on some of the more obscure facts, the shortest track to appear in the countdown was Cypress Hill’s ‘Hits From The Bong’ at 2:41, while the longest was U2’s ‘Lemon’ as 6:58.
