Video has emerged online of Colombian music icon Shakira taking on a pop-punk classic and covering Green Day’s ‘Basket Case’ with her producer.
Ever since Shakira hit the mainstream in 2001 with her fifth album, Laundry Service, fans the world over have been asking the burning question: “when is she going to cover some pop-punk tunes?”
After all, with a large discography of tunes sung in both Spanish and English, a tendency to deliver classics like ‘Whenever, Wherever’, ‘Hips Don’t Lie’, and ‘Beautiful Liar’, and working with icons like Wyclef Jean and Beyoncé, there’s no denying that she’s a versatile performer with her eyes on the prize.
However, despite numerous chart-topping singles and albums, there has been a distinct lack of distorted guitars, pounding drums, and angst-ridden lyrics, leaving fans of punk to wonder when – if ever – Shakira might finally cater to them.
Now, these fans have received their answer thanks to a new video posted by the artist.

Taking to social media yesterday, Shakira shared a video of herself in the studio, tackling a cover of Green Day’s 1995 track ‘Basket Case’. “Me, being a basket case with my producer,” she joked in the caption.
Recorded with only an acoustic guitar as instrumentation, the one-minute snippet sees Shakira showcasing her iconic vocals as she has a little bit of fun with the punk classic.
Chuck in a little bit of comic relief as she forgets the lyrics “cracking up” and pretends to rock out with an air guitar, and you’ve got a cover that’s endearing as it is enigmatic.
While there’s no word as to whether this cover might make it’s way outside of the studio (or if it will even be recorded to begin with), you can definitely see that this is the crossover that fans of Green Day and Shakira have long been hoping for.
In related news, Green Day announced last month that they would be taking part in the Hella Mega tour alongside Weezer and Fall Out Boy, and revealing that their 13th studio album, Father Of All Motherfuckers, would be released in February of 2020. Here’s hoping Shakira scored herself a guest spot on that one.
