The last few months have been pretty big for Billy Corgan (or William Patrick Corgan, as his last album was credited). After releasing a new solo album, the famed rocker hinted he would like to reunite with the ‘classic’ lineup of The Smashing Pumpkins. Now, fans are speculating just that could be coming, after a new post on Corgan’s Instagram account.
Back in October, Billy Corgan announced that he would love to see the original lineup of The Smashing Pumpkins reunite. However, considering that the lineup that included guitarist James Iha, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, and bassist D’arcy Wretzky haven’t played together since 1996, some fans haven’t been sure how to feel.
“As I’ve said a few times publicly that I’m interested in the band being creative again,” Corgan said at the time. “Playing shows is fine – I’m totally cool with the idea that if you come see some iteration of Pumpkins 5.0, it’ll be focused on the ’90s era of work.”
“It’ll be a real celebration – we’ll get the closure we never had. And a 22-year-old who has only ever heard about the myth can come and see it in some form. I think we’d still be fine.”
Then, following the announcement that the new album from The Smashing Pumpkins could be here as soon as this year, Corgan announced that he has finished recording a new double album. Needless to say, it looks like we’ll be getting new material from the famous frontma soon, whether or not he’s backed by the rest of the famed band.
Now, a new Instagram post from Billy Corgan has seen rumours of a reunion swell once more, with an image featuring Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin in the studio together being posted online earlier today.
“Not sure what cross-eyed spy took this photo, but we had a visitor to the studio the other day,” Corgan wrote in the image’s caption. “So many memories when you put the three of us together.”
While it’s no confirmation of a reunion just yet, are lot of factors seem to be lining up just right to point towards a full-scale reunion of The Smashing Pumpkin’s classic lineup. Whatever the case, we’ll happily take whatever Billy Corgan delivers us, whether it be a reunion, or even just a brand new album.
