Legendary writer, director and actor Rob Reiner was found dead with his wife inside their LA home yesterday.
The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of a legend in Rob Reiner, who was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer, inside their home. The couple were found having suffered multiple stab wounds, and according to TMZ, police are treating it as a homicide. The couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was arrested as a key suspect shortly after the discovery, according to Los Angeles police.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a family spokesman said in a statement. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Reiner’s filmography as a director alone charts decades, having helmed a number of beloved films, including This Is Spinal Tap, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery and A Few Good Men.
Tributes from across the industry have been flowing nonstop this week, including from This Is Spinal Tap collaborator Harry Shearer. “Rob was a friend and collaborator through much of my life. He was funny, he was smart, he was a mensch,” Shearer captioned in a tribute on Instagram. “When he came to see the comedy act I was in, and, later, the musical comedy I had co-written, his laugh was uproarious and audible around the block.”

Fellow director Paul Feig wrote, “Rob is one of my heroes. I had the honor of calling him a friend.” Actor Paul Walter Hauser wrote, “Grieving the loss of my favorite director of all-time. A Few Good Men is THE reason I became an actor, and Rob’s filmography behind the camera is THE reason I wanted to direct and still do.”
Reiner’s impact was felt far eyond the entertainment industry, with U.S Speaker Nancy Pelosi writing, “Rob was creative, funny, and beloved. And in all of their endeavors, Michelle was his indispensable partner, intellectual resource, and a loving wife.”
U.S President Donald Trump took a less positive stance, saying in a tone-deaf post on Truth Social that Reiner had passed away “due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”
The 77-year-old director had been vocally critical of Trump throughout his career, using both his platform and his films to examine political corruption and governmental overreach. In a May interview with Rolling Stone, Reiner accused Trump of attempting to “turn this country into a full-blown autocracy.”
Reiner and his wife are survived by children, Jake, Nick and Romy. He was the adoptive father of actress Tracy Reiner, the daughter of his first wife, the late actress and director Penny Marshall.
