Singer-songwriter Adam Newling has released the charmingly named ‘Leather Face’, the latest taste from his new EP Half Cut and Dangerous.
Following in the footsteps of folk rock predecessors like Neil Young and Conor Oberst, Newling’s growling vocals deliver serious lines underneath breezy guitar lines.
“Sunshine all the time is a one way ticket to cancer,” he croons solemnly. “Is a tan not the answer to putting that smile on your face?”
Performing so vulnerably is why Newling likes the track so much. “This is my favourite song from the EP… I enjoy songs like this that allow me to explore my darker side,” he explains. “I push myself to write in different ways to keep my brain motoring and dealing with myself. In this song each line is a personal anecdote in itself and put together I think what makes a nice story.”
‘Leather Face’ follows the previously released singles ‘Sweetness’ and ‘Singing Blackbird’ as the prolific Newling revs up for the release of Half Cut and Dangerous on Friday, April 8th.
He recruited some close friends and collaborators for the EP’s eight tracks, including Ruby Fields and Benny Reed (Skegss). Filled with introspective lyricism and world-weary delivery, it’s set to be his most personal collection of music to date.
“I wrote these songs while I was living in a haunted farmhouse with my friends at Stanwell Tops,” Newling says. “These songs explore the many sides of my mind and personality, the light and the dark.

The EP is about heartbreak and triumph. I explored the doldrums of life, living with a dream of sharing my insecurities through songs and poetry with anyone that happens to be on a similar voyage. With this EP I’m just trying to be as real as I can possibly be.”
Next week, he’ll embark on a national tour to celebrate the release of his new EP, visiting Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane (tickets on sale here). He’ll also be supporting Amy Shark around regional NSW in July.
Adam Newling’s ‘Leather Face’ is available to stream now.
