Grimes is here to tell you that AI is the “fastest path to communism” and it really just feels so long ago since all that she did was make great music.

In a short TikTok video – famously a wonderful place to divulge political and economics viewpoints – Grimes starts off by saying that she has “a proposition for the Communists,” and things are already vague as Communism is far from an umbrella term.

She declares her belief that automated farming through AI is a better alternative to the “enforced farming” of previous Communist regimes. Essentially, she envisages a future where AI can do all the dirty work and us workers can chill out and enjoy the fruits of their labour. It sounds lovely.

“Typically, most of the communist I know are not big fans of AI,” she says but I can’t imagine that she meets a lot of Commies hanging around with Elon Musk’s Silicon Valley mates. “But if you think about it, AI is actually the fastest path to communism,” she says. “Like, we could totally get to a situation where nobody has to work, everybody is provided for with a comfortable state of being. Comfortable living.”

As Consequence of Sound points out, that sounds strikingly like techno-utopianism, the idea that advancements in science and technology could and should bring about a utopia. But, given that her partner seems intent more on getting to Mars rather than improving the current conditions on Earth, I doubt that she holds that ideology in high regards.

Grimes lecturing about the possibilities of communism while married to one of the world’s richest men feels like the death of irony, truly. RIP.

The memes, understandably, arrived thick and fast. Here’s just several excellent ones, some serious and some fun.
