Josh Homme explains how Dave Grohl helped him discover his favourite Aussie act

Queens Of The Stone Age are undoubtedly one of the biggest rock bands in the world, but it turns out that huge rock stars are just like us, and often need their mates to help them discover new tunes.

Currently about halfway through their Aussie tour with local act The Chats, QOTSA frontman Josh Homme recently spoke to Apple’s Beats 1 with Zane Lowe (via Music Feeds) about how Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl turned him onto the homegrown heroes.

“They have an utterly Australian song called ‘Smoko’,” Homme explained to Zane Lowe.

“I saw it, and Dave Grohl turned it on to me, and then the next thing I know I’m playing it for Iggy [Pop],” he continued. “And I told them that and their jaws were just like completely open.”

Josh Homme also remarked about how The Chats’ divisive nature was rather reminiscent about the early days of Queens Of The Stone Age.

“It reminds me of when everyone couldn’t stand us, and then one thing happens – you sell 20 records and you never know who those 20 records went to,” he explained. “It could have gone to the most strange buffet of humans in existence that you can imagine.”

“I think that’s what was always fascinating to me; is not how many people liked it, but how much did they like it? There’s something about music — it’s never wrong. Show me who you think the worst band in the world is and I’ll show you 300 people who are willing to die for it.”

“And in a certain way I’ve always felt like I’d rather have people that really understand the music half as many of those as it was double but they did get us.”

Queens Of The Stone Age have already had a pretty stellar tour so far, but this visit to our shores is far from over, with shows in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth still to come over the next week.
