It’s been almost twelve years exactly since Tool released their last album, 2006’s 10,000 Days. Now, while talking about A Perfect Circle’s upcoming album, the enigmatic frontman has referred to Tool’s long-awaited studio album as his Chinese Democracy.
Ever since Tool first released 10,000 Days back in 2006, fans have been anxiously awaiting a new album. In that time, the band have never really stopped touring, and have even visited Australia three times in the interim. However, despite constant rumours, innuendo, and broken promises, we’re yet to hear the new record.
However, while things are currently looking up, Maynard James Keenan’s other band, A Perfect Circle, are set to release their first new album in 14 years in just a matter of days. Though the long waiting period does not seem to have gone unnoticed by the famous vocalist.
Speaking to Revolver, Maynard opened up about his the fact that the new A Perfect Circle record was borne from his frustration to push forward the recording process for Tool. “I had this other looming project that can’t seem to go forward, as much as I’ve tried, every magic word in the book that I tried,” Maynard revealed.
“It’s just no different — and worse because there’s pressure now, and what are we? Chinese Democracy II or III? So I saw a window.”
“Having conversations with Billy [Howerdel, A Perfect Circle guitarist], it seemed like he was ready,” he continued. “If I were to do another Puscifer record, I’m going to get fucking murdered in my sleep because people are going to keep blaming that project for the delay – when it’s not.”
While Guns N’ Roses infamous Chinese Democracy album eventually came out in 2008, 15 years after the band’s last album, it appears that the recording sessions for A Perfect Circle’s new record were a bit less dramatic, with recording sporadically occurring over much of the last eight years.
While A Perfect Circle are yet to announce Aussie tour dates (and while Tool is yet to release a new album release date), it’s evident that it isn’t due to Maynard just resting on his laurels. “I’m already booked up until probably March 1st of 2019,” he said. “I already know where I’m gonna be.”
A Perfect Circle’s first album in 14 years, Eat The Elephant, is set to be released on April 20th. In the meantime, check out the album’s latest single.
