Sydney beatmaker Flume has had an undeniably huge year.

2012 has seen the electronic wunderkid, real name Harley Streten, debut his self-titled album at #1 on the iTunes Album Chart and at the #2 spot on the ARIA charts, as well as extensive tours across the country, playing illustrious festivals such as Splendour In The Grass and Parklife.

Now, just five weeks after its release, Flume’s debut album has already gone Gold in Australia.

The album, which our Tone Deaf reviewer claimed “exceeds all expectations” and found a “satisfying balance between incredibly catchy [and] subtle layers of complexity”, has been making waves across the country since its release, and has obviously struck a chord with Aussie listeners resulting in its swift rise to Gold status in sales.

After conquering Australia so quickly, Flume’s album has also caught the attention of influential international media, having been featured on Pitchforkas well as named New Band Of The Day by The Guardian. Now the Sydney native seems set to take on the UK and America direct, signing new record deals in both countries to distribute his self-titled debut, capitalising on the momentum he’s already gained at home.“I feel like my kind of music is more suited overseas. Things could get more serious in the States and Europe.” – Flume

Flume’s hugely successfully album will be released early next year on two respected indie labels, Transgressive/Co-Op in the UK and Europe, and Mom+Pop in the US.

Streten will also be embarking on his first European tour in January, but not before making an appearance at Falls Festival in Lorne, as well as jetting to Bussleton, WA for Southbound Festival. Upon his return to the country, Flume will also be playing at Laneway Festival and Golden Plains in February and March respectively.

Flume may well follow in the footsteps of fellow countrymen Gotye and Tame Impala, who have both enjoyed huge success internationally recently.

Home-grown hero Wally de Backer topped Billboard’s List Of Highest Selling Songs Of 2012, and also claimed three Grammy nominations, while the psychedelic Western Australians claimed NME’s Album Of The Year for their sophomore effort Lonerism, the first time an Aussie act has achieved such a feat in its 38-year history.

Both Gotye and Tame Impala were some of the most blogged about bands overseas, ranking #38 and #12 respectively on The Hype Machine‘s Top 50 list of the most blogged about acts of 2012.

In an interview with Tone Deaf earlier this year, Flume said that “I feel like my kind of music is more suited overseas. Things could get more serious in the States and Europe.”

Now with two freshly signed record deals, 2013 may well be the Sydney-based producer’s time to shine internationally.
