Tool have given fans a dose of new material at their recent festival performance, dishing out two tracks ostensibly from their upcoming record.

For quite a while now, the hype for Tool’s new record has been at what can only be described as rabid fever-pitch.

Just last week, we passed the 13th anniversary of Tool’s last album, 10,000 Days. Ever since the record was released, fans have been wondering when the band might finally unleash a new collection of stunning songs.

While we managed to receive almost the entirety of Puscifer’s career in that time, along with a new album and live shows from A Perfect Circle, these last few months have indicated that Tool are finally gearing up to unleash their new record.

This time last year, we received a partial snippet of a new track called ‘Descending’, undoubtedly exciting fans with the promise of new material. Since then, things have been quiet in regards to actually hearing fresh material, though the rumour mill has continued.

Earlier this year though, drummer Danny Carey said the band’s new album would arrive in “mid-April”, before Maynard James Keenan clarified things by noting the release date would be “somewhere between Mid May and Mid July. More focused updates to follow as we progress.”

While the band seemed to indicate recently they would be performing new music on their upcoming tour, guitarist Adam Jones then shared a video of ‘Descending’ on his Instagram account, implying that new music was set to arrive sooner rather than later.

On Sunday night, Tool took to Florida’s Metropolitan Park to perform at the Welcome To Rockville festival, the opening show of their US tour, and first performance since May of 2018.

Opening their show with classics like ‘Ænema’, ‘The Pot’, and ‘Parabola’, fans soon received a treat by way of ‘Descending’, appearing in the form most likely to appear on their new record.

While Tool had been performing ‘Descending’ since as far back as 2012, this marked the first time that the tune featured lyrics, meaning that they haven’t just been wasting time in the studio for all these years.

However, the good news didn’t end there, with the band bringing out another new track just moments later. Titled ‘Invincible’ according to the setlist, fans had been noting that the track appeared to be titled ‘Warrior’, as per comments made by Maynard during the performance.

Although we’re still no closer to knowing when the new record – or even a new single – might be released, this is the most new material Tool fans have received in 13 years. Let’s hope this trend continues!
