A Dave Grohl metal cover of a 90s pop rock classic? Where do I sign up? He and Greg Kurstin have kicked off their Hanukkah Sessions with a cover of Lisa Loeb’s classic ‘Stay’.
The Foo Fighters singer and Kurstin started their Hanukkah Sessions last year during lockdown, covering prominent Jewish artists (Grohl himself isn’t Jewish).
Last year saw covers of the likes of Drake, The Knack, and Elastica, which is quite the varied selection. That variety has continued this time round with Loeb’s 1994 hit ‘Stay’, the lead single from another 90s classic, the film Reality Bites.
“Welcome back to the menorah, y’all,” the YouTube description says. “Let’s kick it this year’s Hanukkah sessions with one of Dallas, Texas’s favorite Jewish daughters. So put on your coffee shop spectacles and your Betsey Johnson dress and HAVA listen to this… “Stay” by Lisa Loeb.”
The video for Night One of the Hanukkah Sessions sees Grohl looking delightful in a flowery dress as he belts out Loeb’s lyrics. After beginning tenderly, befitting the folksy singer songwriter tradition of the song, Grohl then enters full metal screamo mode. He then returns to the style of Loeb and then back to hardcore and back again – you get the picture.
That’s how you kick off your Hanukkah Sessions right. It’s comical but also respectful, playful but also powerful. Foo Fighters to release a screamo album to follow that Bee Gees cover album then?
Written and composed by Loeb, ‘Stay’ became a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and it was historic too – that made Loeb the first artist to top the U.S. chart before being signed to a record label, no mean feat. The music video – directed by Reality Bites star Ethan Hawke – was nominated for the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
