Earlier this month, a record-breaking 55 Australian artists hit Austin, Texas for the annual music industry conference SXSW.
Now a strong selection of Aussies are headed to UK’s equivalent career-breaking event, the Great Escape Festival. Held annually in the Brighton seaside, this year’s Great Escape will take place over three days in May and organisers have just added another 100 acts to the 2014 lineup, bringing the total tally to 400 local and international bands.
Among the new selections are more local artists who will be jetting over to the UK to strut their stuff on the international stage, making for a total of 17 Australian music-makers appearing at this year’s event.
The new additions include independent songsmith Kate Miller-Heidke, raucous Sydney rockers Sticky Fingers, Melbourne composer and pianist Luke Howard, and muscular rock trio Calling All Cars. The Melbourne band recently successfully crowdfunded their plans to relocate to London to further their rock dominance abroad after releasing their much-anticipated third album, Raise The People.
Other previously announced Aussies on the Great Escape 2014 lineup include the AMP-winning Hermitude, spy rock suitor Jeremy Neale and fellow Brisbane mates John Steel Singers, garage knockabouts Dune Rats, rock juggernaut Money For Rope, the Findlay sisters of Stonefield, genre-benders Ginger And The Ghost, electro trio Seekae, Triple J favourites The Creases, and previous Great Escape attendees The Trouble With Templeton and Tigertown.
Courtney Barnett also expands her budding international tour itinerary with a visit to the Brighton music gathering. Just announced for Lollapalooza 2014, the laconic Melbourne songwriting maverick has already lined up an impressive run of international festival appearances, taking in Primavera Sound, Field Day, Firefly, NXNE, (but sadly not Sasquatch) while also scoring a $15,000 arts grant to record her full-length debut album.
The Great Escape festival is a major platform for making in-roads into the UK, with previous festivals featuring breakout performances from acts like The XX, Alt-J, Alabama Shakes, and Adele while last year’s event saw over 10 Aussie acts gaining buzz amongst the British music scene.
